Art Corp Volunteer

General Summary:

Art Corps is a developmental art program taught solely by parents that teaches children the fundamentals of art. Taught solely by parent volunteers, Art Corps provides a hands-on art experience for students in every classroom. No teaching or art experience necessary.

Responsibilities:

  • Follow easy-to-teach lesson plans step by step
  • Teach 1 hour lessons 8 times a year for one classroom
  • Review art workshop for each lesson
  • Set up and clean up art supplies for each lesson
  • Get support from Art Corp team lead

Commitment:

  • Level – Basic
  • Time – 2-3 hours/month, during school hours
  • Frequency – Monthly, 8 times

After School Enrichment Program (ASEP) Volunteer

General Summary:

The After School Enrichment Program (ASEP) is offered after school on the TES campus during three, eight-week long sessions. Children can learn a new language or a new skill, such as dance, fencing, art and more. This program is open to all children in the community of Tierrasanta.

Responsibilities:

  • Check students into their classes
  • Ensure all students are checked out to authorized guardian after program

Time Commitment:

  • Level – Basic
  • Time – 1 hour/week for ASEP session (8 weeks), after school hours
  • Frequency – Weekly, 8 times

Auction Volunteer

General Summary:

Auctions are a great fundraiser for the Foundation and TES. Silent or on-line auctions are generally done during Back to School Nights and Open House.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with businesses and parents to solicit donations of items or services to be auctioned off
  • Create auction bidding sheets or work with web team to set up online auction
  • Display auction items/auction area in an easy and appealing way
  • Recruiting of other parent volunteers if needed

Commitment:

  • Level – Moderate
  • Time – 3 hours for set up & event + additional time for requesting donations , after school/night
  • Frequency – Once

Book Fair Volunteer

General Summary:

The Mrs. Nelsons book fair is an important fundraiser for the TES Foundation that occurs twice a year and has a variety of opportunities to volunteer. Volunteers are needed to help children make wish lists, help during recess, during lunch, after school or to help during Back to School Night/Open House.

Responsibilities: (can do one or multiple)

  • Help students make a wish list during classroom visits
  • Work as cashier for book sales
  • Assist students during various times (during recess, after school, etc)
  • Help set up and/or tear down

Commitment:

  • Level – Basic
  • Time – 1-3 hours, varies depending on role
  • Frequency – Once

Camp Fair Volunteer

General Summary:

The Summer Camp Fair is a one-stop shop to help parents find the perfect summer camp for their children. Local camp providers come onto our campus for an afternoon to show off their fun and provide information about their summer camps.

Responsibilities:

  • Contact San Diego vendors who provide summer camps for elementary age students
  • Schedule 8-10 (or more) vendors to participate in the 2 hour event
  • Work with school to set up and tear down vendors areas
  • Collect payment from vendors for space rentals

Commitment:

  • Level – Moderate
  • Time – 2 hours, + additional time coordinating vendors (approx. 10 hrs)
  • Frequency – Once

Community Partnerships Volunteer

General Summary:

Community Partnerships are programs that generate cash for TES by collecting Box Tops and Labels for Education and encourage families to sign up for Shoperoo, Amazon Smile and other online programs.

Responsibilities: (can do one or multiple)

  • Count boxtops monthly and recognize winning classes
  • Help research other opportunities for community partnerships
  • Assist Team Lead with getting information to the Tierra Times, EBlast, and other marketing venues

Commitment:

  • Level – Basic
  • Time – 1 hour, anytime
  • Frequency – Monthly

Dine Out Volunteer

General Summary:

TES Dine-Outs are fundraising and community building events held monthly during the school year. A percentage of all sales generated during Dine-Outs are given back to TES and used to fund various school-wide programs.

Responsibilities: (can do one or multiple)

  • Work with team lead to find local restaurants to participate
  • Assist in negotiating the percentage back for TES
  • Provide details leading up to each event with specific restaurants, times, etc.

Commitment:

  • Level – Basic
  • Time – 1-2 hours, flexible times/night
  • Frequency – Monthly

Gardens Volunteer

General Summary:

Awarded a Whole Foods Garden Grant in the Spring of 2012, the Playground to Plate Gardens program is responsible for creating and maintaining all of the flower beds, garden beds, fruit trees, and potted plants around the school grounds 12 months out of the year. In the coming school year, TES is striving to rebuild the greenhouse and continue with monthly programs for each grade.

Responsibilities (can do one or multiple):

  • Water garden beds several times a week
  • Help maintain and plant grade level garden
  • Teach monthly gardening lesson to grade level class
  • Work with outside organizations for support and supplies

Grab-a-Slice Volunteer

General Summary:

The TES Foundation sells slices of pizza and whole pizzas to TES families, faculty and students three times a year, during Back-to-School Night, the Science Fair and Open House. Proceeds from pizza sales are used to support the TES Science Program.

Responsibilities: (can do one or multiple)

  • Set up Pizza Station
  • Work station handing out pizza and/or collecting money
  • Assist in cleaning up Pizza Station
  • Pick up pizzas if needed

Commitment:

  • Level – Basic
  • Time – 1 hour, night
  • Frequency – 3x a year

Graphic Design Volunteer

General Summary:

Graphic Designers will work with the Marketing Team to create items to help advertise TES Foundation events and fundraisers.

Responsibilities: (can do one or multiple)

  • Create Logos for events/fundraisers
  • Design flyers and banners
  • Work with Webmaster on graphics for website

Commitment:

  • Level – Moderate
  • Time – 2-3 hours, anytime
  • Frequency – Monthly

Hospitality Volunteer

General Summary:

Hospitality is designed to provide refreshments and an extra special touch to events such as Chat with the Principal, Student Recognition, Staff Luncheons, and Staff Appreciation Week.

Responsibilities:

  • Set up and tear down for hospitality events
  • Decorate space
  • Provide refreshments/food
  • Create awards, certificates with the help of the Marketing Team

Commitment:

  • Level – Basic
  • Time – 2-3 hours, school hours
  • Frequency – 3x a semester

Jog-a-Thon Volunteer

General Summary:

The Jog-a-thon is the biggest fundraising for TES. Volunteers are needed to help on the day of the run.

Responsibilities:

  • Pass out water to students as they run
  • Check off laps on student shirts
  • Contribute refreshments to pass out after the run
  • Assist with any additional tasks day of the run

Commitment:

  • Level – Basic
  • Time – 1-2 hours, school hours
  • Frequency – once

Kindergarten Orientation Volunteer

General Summary:

Kindergarten Orientation occurs before the school year starts and allows parents, families, and students to come hear about Tierrasanta Elementary and meet the teachers and staff.

Responsibilities (can do one or multiple):

  • Coordinates with the kindergarten teachers to provide information to incoming families about assessment and orientation dates.
  • Works with office staff to set up assessment times and mail orientation letters to parents.
  • Prepares folders for distribution at orientation with important handouts for new TES parents about kindergarten, the school and the Foundation.
  • Assists kindergarten team during orientation
  • Provides refreshments for kindergarten orientation

Membership Volunteer

General Summary:

The Membership Volunteer is the “behind-the-scenes” role done primarily from home at any time. Membership forms are collected at the beginning of the year from all families and throughout the year from new families. A database is created containing contact information and other pertinent information gathered from the membership forms.

Responsibilities:

  • Collect membership forms from Foundation
  • Enter information into membership database
  • Organize forms & scan in or file in binder

Commitment:

  • Level – Basic
  • Time – 5-7 hours, anytime
  • Frequency – several times

Parents Choice Team Lead

General Summary:

Parents’ Choice is our primary and most important fundraiser at TES that raises money for Art Corp, gardens, running club, ASEP, and classroom grants! Families’ voluntary participation in Parents’ Choice is critical to the continued success of many programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates membership registrations, t-shirt distribution, additional fundraising activities

Commitment:

  • Level – Advanced
  • Time – 1-2 hours, anytime
  • Frequency – once

Photography Volunteer

General Summary:

Photography volunteer can help capture school and student life at Tierrasanta Elementary School. Photography Volunteers will have the opportunity to help at one or more events during the year.

Responsibilities (can do one or multiple):

  • Take Spring Pictures of students as a fundraiser
  • Assist with post processing of pictures
  • Help with Back to School family pictures
  • Take pictures at an all school event

Commitment:

  • Level – Moderate
  • Time – 4-6 hours, varies
  • Frequency – once

Picture Day Volunteer

General Summary:

The Picture Day team works to select a photographer that best meets the needs of TES. The team distributes information to parents about picture day, prices, make-up days, etc. The day of pictures, team members work with the photographers, classroom teachers, and school staff to ensure pictures are taken in a timely & orderly manner.

Responsibilities (can do one or multiple):

  • Work with photographer to confirm dates/times
  • Assist with creating schedule for classes to have pictures taken
  • Help day of pictures to run smoothly

Commitment:

  • Level – Basic
  • Time – 2-3 hours, during school hours
  • Frequency – 2x a year (Fall and Spring)

Room Parent Volunteer

General Summary:

Each classroom needs 1-3 room parents to work with the classroom teacher to organize class events throughout the year.  Being a room parent is a great way to get to know your child’s teacher and to help in the classroom a few times a year.  Room parents will get an overview of the expectations and samples/suggestions at a brief orientation near the beginning of the school year.

Responsibilities :

  • Help organize class events throughout the year such as parties and class-specific events
  • Put together Monday folder items to go home to students
  • Coordinate any token of appreciate for teacher’s birthday, teacher appreciation week, etc.
  • Assist with classroom notices or reminders to students and parents
  • Work with teacher for any additional help needed

Commitment:

  • Level – Basic
  • Time – varies, during school hours
  • Frequency – weekly

Running Club Volunteer

General Summary:

Students have the opportunity to be a part of the running club every day before school, collecting tickets from parent volunteers. Teachers collect tickets in the classroom and keep track of how far each student runs. At the end of the year, prizes are awarded based on how many miles are run- look for new goals this year!

Responsibilities (can do one or multiple):

  • Hand out tickets to students for laps
  • Work with team leader if needed to assist with prize distribution

Commitment:

  • Level – Basic
  • Time – 15 minutes, before school
  • Frequency – weekly (one day)

School Marquee Volunteer

General Summary:

Volunteers are responsible for posting announcements and upcoming events on the school marquee once a month or as needed.

  • Update school marquee with events for coming month

Science Fair Volunteer

General Summary:

Each year students are invited to participate in the TES Science Fair.  During the day of the fair, each class has the opportunity to view the science fair with their class.  In the evening, the Science Fair is open to the public; parents and families are welcome to view the students’ projects.  The following day everything is taken down and students take their projects home. Volunteers are needed within a few days leading up to and immediately following the Science Fair.

Responsibilities:

  • Set up tables and items before event
  • Tear down tables and clean up auditorium after event
  • Help out during the evening Science Fair

Commitment:

  • Level – Basic
  • Time – 3-5 hours
  • Frequency – once

Spirit Gear Volunteer

General Summary:

Spirit Gear encourages school spirit through t-shirt & sweatshirt sales. Gear is sold by parent volunteers at Back to School Night, Student Recognition Assemblies, Open House and Kindergarten Orientation. Spirit Gear is also available for moms and dads! On Fridays a grade level is selected to see which class is wearing the most spirit gear or red and gold colors to win a class prize.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with selling Spirit Gear at various school events

Commitment:

  • Time – 1-2 hours, nights
  • Frequency – 3-4 times/year

Talent Show Volunteer

General Summary:

The Talent Show is a fun and exciting showcase of our students’ many talents.  The audition and dress rehearsal will each take place on a Friday after school and will each last a few hours.  Performance day features three shows (morning and afternoon assemblies for students, and an evening show for families).

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with auditions, dress rehearsal, and talent show performance
  • Work with performers and announcers at auditions
  • Help with technical aspects of the show such as lighting, sound, and videography

Commitment:

  • Level – Basic
  • Time – 2-3 hours, 2 Fridays afterschool + one night event
  • Frequency – once

Tierra Times Volunteer

General Summary:

For 35 years the Tierra Times has delivered a wealth of community news to the residents of Tierrasanta/Murphy Canyon. Their SCHOOL NEWS columns offer all neighborhood schools the opportunity to share their mission, goals, achievements, and upcoming events – a veritable window into our TES world.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with TES Principal and Foundation President for monthly newsworthy events
  • Provide information to writer(s) to create news article(s) for Tierra Times or;
  • Collect information for articles and a brief text for the monthly newspaper
  • Submit articles and pictures to Tierra Times by submission date

Commitment:

  • Level – Moderate
  • Time – 3-5 hours, anytime
  • Frequency – monthly

Writing Volunteer

General Summary:

Writing Volunteers help write text for the Tierra Times, school website, flyers, weekly newsletter and other marketing items.

  • Write “blurbs” for weekly newsletter
  • Write articles for monthly Tierra Times
  • Write text for Foundation & School Website
